Chapter 20

1 It came to pass1961 after310 this3651 also, that the children1121 of Moab,4124 and the children1121 of Ammon,5983 and with5973 them other beside4480 the Ammonites,5984 came935 against5921 Jehoshaphat3092 to battle.4421

2 Then there came935 some that told5046 Jehoshaphat,3092 saying,559 There cometh935 a great7227 multitude1995 against5921 thee from beyond4480 5676 the sea3220 on this side Syria;4480 758 and, behold,2009 they be in Hazazon-tamar,2688 which1931 is En-gedi.5872

3 And Jehoshaphat3092 feared,3372 and set5414 853 himself6440 to seek1875 the LORD,3068 and proclaimed7121 a fast6685 throughout5921 all3605 Judah.3063

4 And Judah3063 gathered themselves together,6908 to ask1245 help of4480 the LORD:3068 even1571 out of all4480 3605 the cities5892 of Judah3063 they came935 to seek1245 853 the LORD.3068

5 And Jehoshaphat3092 stood5975 in the congregation6951 of Judah3063 and Jerusalem,3389 in the house1004 of the LORD,3068 before6440 the new2319 court,2691

6 And said,559 O LORD3068 God430 of our fathers,1 art not3808 thou859 God430 in heaven?8064 and rulest4910 not thou859 over all3605 the kingdoms4467 of the heathen?1471 and in thine hand3027 is there not power3581 and might,1369 so that none369 is able to withstand3320 5973 thee?

7 Art not3808 thou859 our God,430 who didst drive out3423 853 the inhabitants3427 of this2063 land776 before4480 6440 thy people5971 Israel,3478 and gavest5414 it to the seed2233 of Abraham85 thy friend157 forever?5769

8 And they dwelt3427 therein, and have built1129 thee a sanctuary4720 therein for thy name,8034 saying,559

9 If,518 when evil7451 cometh935 upon5921 us, as the sword,2719 judgment,8196 or pestilence,1698 or famine,7458 we stand5975 before6440 this2088 house,1004 and in thy presence,6440 (for3588 thy name8034 is in this2088 house,)1004 and cry2199 unto413 thee in our affliction,4480 6869 then thou wilt hear8085 and help.3467

10 And now,6258 behold,2009 the children1121 of Ammon5983 and Moab4124 and mount2022 Seir,8165 whom834 thou wouldest not3808 let5414 Israel3478 invade,935 when they came935 out of the land4480 776 of Egypt,4714 but3588 they turned5493 from4480 5921 them, and destroyed8045 them not;3808

11 Behold,2009 I say, how they1992 reward1580 5921 us, to come935 to cast us out1644 of thy possession,4480 3425 which834 thou hast given us to inherit.3423

12 O our God,430 wilt thou not3808 judge8199 them? for3588 we have no369 might3581 against6440 this2088 great7227 company1995 that cometh935 against5921 us; neither3808 know3045 we587 what4100 to do:6213 but3588 our eyes5869 are upon5921 thee.

13 And all3605 Judah3063 stood5975 before6440 the LORD,3068 with1571 their little ones,2945 their wives,802 and their children.1121

14 Then upon5921 Jahaziel3166 the son1121 of Zechariah,2148 the son1121 of Benaiah,1141 the son1121 of Jeiel,3273 the son1121 of Mattaniah,4983 a Levite3881 of4480 the sons1121 of Asaph,623 came1961 the Spirit7307 of the LORD3068 in the midst8432 of the congregation;6951

15 And he said,559 Hearken7181 ye, all3605 Judah,3063 and ye inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem,3389 and thou king4428 Jehoshaphat,3092 Thus3541 saith559 the LORD3068 unto you, Be not afraid859 3372 408 nor408 dismayed2865 by reason of4480 6440 this2088 great7227 multitude;1995 for3588 the battle4421 is not3808 yours, but3588 God's.430

16 Tomorrow4279 go ye down3381 against5921 them: behold,2009 they come up5927 by the cliff4608 of Ziz;6732 and ye shall find4672 them at the end5490 of the brook,5158 before6440 the wilderness4057 of Jeruel.3385

17 Ye shall not3808 need to fight3898 in this2063 battle: set yourselves,3320 stand5975 ye still, and see7200 853 the salvation3444 of the LORD3068 with5973 you, O Judah3063 and Jerusalem:3389 fear3372 not,408 nor408 be dismayed;2865 tomorrow4279 go out3318 against6440 them: for the LORD3068 will be with5973 you.

18 And Jehoshaphat3092 bowed his head6915 with his face639 to the ground:776 and all3605 Judah3063 and the inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem3389 fell5307 before6440 the LORD,3068 worshiping7812 the LORD.3068

19 And the Levites,3881 of the children1121 of4480 the Kohathites,6956 and of4480 the children1121 of the Korhites,7145 stood up6965 to praise1984 the LORD3068 God430 of Israel3478 with a loud1419 voice6963 on high.4605

20 And they rose early7925 in the morning,1242 and went forth3318 into the wilderness4057 of Tekoa:8620 and as they went forth,3318 Jehoshaphat3092 stood5975 and said,559 Hear8085 me, O Judah,3063 and ye inhabitants3427 of Jerusalem;3389 Believe539 in the LORD3068 your God,430 so shall ye be established;539 believe539 his prophets,5030 so shall ye prosper.6743

21 And when he had consulted3289 with413 the people,5971 he appointed5975 singers7891 unto the LORD,3068 and that should praise1984 the beauty1927 of holiness,6944 as they went out3318 before6440 the army,2502 and to say,559 Praise3034 the LORD;3068 for3588 his mercy2617 endureth forever.5769

22 And when6256 they began2490 to sing7440 and to praise,8416 the LORD3068 set5414 ambushments693 against5921 the children1121 of Ammon,5983 Moab,4124 and mount2022 Seir,8165 which were come935 against Judah;3063 and they were smitten.5062

23 For the children1121 of Ammon5983 and Moab4124 stood up5975 against5921 the inhabitants3427 of mount2022 Seir,8165 utterly to slay2763 and destroy8045 them: and when they had made an end3615 of the inhabitants3427 of Seir,8165 every one376 helped5826 to destroy4889 another.7453

24 And when Judah3063 came935 toward5921 the watch tower4707 in the wilderness,4057 they looked6437 unto413 the multitude,1995 and, behold,2009 they were dead bodies6297 fallen5307 to the earth,776 and none369 escaped.6413

25 And when Jehoshaphat3092 and his people5971 came935 to take away962 853 the spoil7998 of them, they found4672 among them in abundance7230 both riches7399 with the dead bodies,6297 and precious2530 jewels,3627 which they stripped off5337 for themselves, more than369 they could carry away:4853 and they were1961 three7969 days3117 in gathering962 853 of the spoil,7998 it1931 was so much.7227

26 And on the fourth7243 day3117 they assembled themselves6950 in the valley6010 of Berachah;1294 for3588 there8033 they blessed1288 853 the LORD:3068 therefore5921 3651 853 the name8034 of the same1931 place4725 was called,7121 The valley6010 of Berachah,1294 unto5704 this day.3117

27 Then they returned,7725 every3605 man376 of Judah3063 and Jerusalem,3389 and Jehoshaphat3092 in the forefront7218 of them, to go again7725 to413 Jerusalem3389 with joy;8057 for3588 the LORD3068 had made them to rejoice8055 over their enemies.4480 341

28 And they came935 to Jerusalem3389 with psalteries5035 and harps3658 and trumpets2689 unto413 the house1004 of the LORD.3068

29 And the fear6343 of God430 was1961 on5921 all3605 the kingdoms4467 of those countries,776 when they had heard8085 that3588 the LORD3068 fought3898 against5973 the enemies341 of Israel.3478

30 So the realm4438 of Jehoshaphat3092 was quiet:8252 for his God430 gave him rest5117 round about.4480 5439

31 And Jehoshaphat3092 reigned4427 over5921 Judah:3063 he was thirty7970 and five2568 years8141 old1121 when he began to reign,4427 and he reigned4427 twenty6242 and five2568 years8141 in Jerusalem.3389 And his mother's517 name8034 was Azubah5806 the daughter1323 of Shilhi.7977

32 And he walked1980 in the way1870 of Asa609 his father,1 and departed5493 not3808 from4480 it, doing6213 that which was right3477 in the sight5869 of the LORD.3068

33 Howbeit389 the high places1116 were not3808 taken away:5493 for as yet5750 the people5971 had not3808 prepared3559 their hearts3824 unto the God430 of their fathers.1

34 Now the rest3499 of the acts1697 of Jehoshaphat,3092 first7223 and last,314 behold,2009 they are written3789 in the book1697 of Jehu3058 the son1121 of Hanani,2607 who834 is mentioned5927 in5921 the book5612 of the kings4428 of Israel.3478

35 And after310 this3651 did Jehoshaphat3092 king4428 of Judah3063 join himself2266 with5973 Ahaziah274 king4428 of Israel,3478 who1931 did very wickedly:7561 6213

36 And he joined2266 himself with5973 him to make6213 ships591 to go1980 to Tarshish:8659 and they made6213 the ships591 in Ezion-geber.6100

37 Then Eliezer461 the son1121 of Dodavah1735 of Mareshah4480 4762 prophesied5012 against5921 Jehoshaphat,3092 saying,559 Because thou hast joined thyself2266 with5973 Ahaziah,274 the LORD3068 hath broken6555 853 thy works.4639 And the ships591 were broken,7665 that they were not able6113 3808 to go1980 to413 Tarshish.8659

Chapter 20

1 AND it came to pass after this, the children of Moab and the children of Ammon, with the mighty men of war, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.

2 Then there came messengers and told Jehoshaphat, saying, A great army has come against you from beyond the Red Sea; and, behold, they are encamping in Jericho, which is En-gad.

3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and he raised up his face to pray before the LORD and proclaimed a fast for all the inhabitants of Judah. And he said to them, Gather yourselves together and come let us beseech the LORD our God.

4 And all the inhabitants of Judah gathered themselves together, even from far off cities, and they came to beseech the LORD.

5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the midst of the assembly of Judah in the house of the LORD, which is in Jerusalem, before the new court,

6 And he prayed and said, O LORD God of our fathers, thou art the God in heaven, and thou art ruler over all the kingdoms of the world, and thine is power and might, and now I stand before thee praying.

7 And thou art our God, who didst destroy the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel and gavest it to the descendants of Abraham thy friend for ever.

8 And they have dwelt in it, and have built in it a sanctuary for thy name, saying,

9 Now, because there is a sanctuary among us, no evil shall come upon us, nor the sword nor judgment nor pestilence nor famine; and we shall come and stand before this house and before thee (for thy name has been invoked in this house), and we will pray before thee in this house, and thou wilt hear our prayer and save us.

10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon, of the mount of Gabel, and of Moab, with whom thou wouldst not let Israel mix when thou didst bring them out of the land of Egypt, and thou hadst removed the yoke of the Egyptians from them,

11 Behold, now they reward us; they are coming to drive us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.

12 O our God, make thyself known and judge them, for we have no strength to stand before them; bring upon them the sword of thy judgment, for we do not know what to do; but our eyes are upon thee.

13 And all Judah stood before the LORD with their little ones, their wives, their sons, and their daughters.

14 Then upon Hazaiel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jehoiadah, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the spirit of might from before the LORD, and he was standing before the people of Israel;

15 And he said, Hearken, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat, thus says the LORD your God: Be not afraid nor dismayed because of this great army; for the battle is not yours, but God's.

16 Hasten, go down against them; behold, they are coming up early in the morning; and you shall find them in the cliff of the valley, before the wilderness. They are coming up to fight against you.

17 And in that hour, stand still and see the salvation that the LORD will do for you, O Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them; for the LORD God will help you.

18 Then Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground and worshipped; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD.

19 And the Levites of the descendants of the Kohathites and of the descendants of the Korhites stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice,

20 And they rose early in the morning and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the LORD your God, so you shall be established; believe in his prophets, and you shall be delivered.

21 Then he stood in the midst of the people and said, Come, let us give thanks to the LORD, and give praise to the excellency of his holiness, as he is going forth before our armies to fight for us against our enemies. And they said, Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his mercy endures for ever. Then the hills began to give praise and the mountains began to rejoice.

22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

24 And when Judah came toward the watchtower in the wilderness, they looked to the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none had escaped.

25 And when Jehoshaphat and the people of Israel came to take away the spoil from them, they found among them an abundance of booty: riches, bridles, horses, and precious jewels, and they took for themselves whatever they desired.

26 And it came to pass after three days, when they were through taking the spoil, because it was so much, they assembled themselves on the fourth day in the valley of Borktha; for there they blessed the LORD God; therefore the name of that place was called the valley of Borktha to this day.

27 Then all the men of Judah returned to Jerusalem with Jehoshaphat at their head, for they were returning to Jerusalem rejoicing; for the LORD had made them rejoice over their enemies.

28 And they came to Jerusalem with songs, harps, lyres, and curved and straight trumpets, to the house of the LORD.

29 And the fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel.

30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet; for the LORD gave him rest on all sides.

31 And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah; he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Arubah the daughter of Shilhi.

32 And he walked in all the ways of Asa his father, and did not turn aside from them, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD.

33 However the shrines on the high places were not removed; for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts to the God of their fathers.

34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the sayings of Jehu the son of Hanan, which are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel.

35 And after this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly, more than all the kings of Israel.

36 And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made the ships in Ezion-gaber.

37 Then Eliezer the son of Jehoshaphat's uncle prophesied in the city of Mareshah against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because of your partnership with Ahaziah, the LORD has confused all your works. And the ships were damaged and were not able to go to Tarshish.

4 And Judah3063 gathered themselves together,6908 to ask1245 help of4480 the LORD:3068 even1571 out of all4480 3605 the cities5892 of Judah3063 they came935 to seek1245 853 the LORD.3068

5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the midst of the assembly of Judah in the house of the LORD, which is in Jerusalem, before the new court,

6 And he prayed and said, O LORD God of our fathers, thou art the God in heaven, and thou art ruler over all the kingdoms of the world, and thine is power and might, and now I stand before thee praying.

7 Art not3808 thou859 our God,430 who didst drive out3423 853 the inhabitants3427 of this2063 land776 before4480 6440 thy people5971 Israel,3478 and gavest5414 it to the seed2233 of Abraham85 thy friend157 forever?5769

7 And thou art our God, who didst destroy the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel and gavest it to the descendants of Abraham thy friend for ever.

8 And they dwelt3427 therein, and have built1129 thee a sanctuary4720 therein for thy name,8034 saying,559

8 And they have dwelt in it, and have built in it a sanctuary for thy name, saying,

12 O our God, make thyself known and judge them, for we have no strength to stand before them; bring upon them the sword of thy judgment, for we do not know what to do; but our eyes are upon thee.

13 And all3605 Judah3063 stood5975 before6440 the LORD,3068 with1571 their little ones,2945 their wives,802 and their children.1121

13 And all Judah stood before the LORD with their little ones, their wives, their sons, and their daughters.

14 Then upon Hazaiel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jehoiadah, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the spirit of might from before the LORD, and he was standing before the people of Israel;

15 And he said, Hearken, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat, thus says the LORD your God: Be not afraid nor dismayed because of this great army; for the battle is not yours, but God's.

16 Tomorrow4279 go ye down3381 against5921 them: behold,2009 they come up5927 by the cliff4608 of Ziz;6732 and ye shall find4672 them at the end5490 of the brook,5158 before6440 the wilderness4057 of Jeruel.3385

16 Hasten, go down against them; behold, they are coming up early in the morning; and you shall find them in the cliff of the valley, before the wilderness. They are coming up to fight against you.
